| Phil Brown 1946-2023 - Obituary and Funeral Arrangements | |
| 03/10/2023 | |
| Phil Brown 1946-2023 Phil was a founding member of the FNRM South of England Group committee. He organised the summer outings and visits for members, including the week-end stays in York tied in with the Friends AGM, and, from 1995 to 2010, the Group’s indoor evening meetings. He also played an active role in the Group’s outreach and sales activities, often using his caravan to act as a backdrop to our stand at events such as the memorable visits by the replica Rocket to the Steam Fair at Weeting in 1993, SR loco Cheltenham to its namesake town in 2013, and the attendance of SR Winston Churchill at a rather muddy Great Dorset Steam Fair in 2012. An aeronautics engineer by profession, working for the Ministry of Defence, he had a lifelong interest in railways. This was originally stimulated by his grandfather who worked for the North Eastern Railway at Newcastle Central Station, and reinforced by his regular commuting into London during his working life. As a volunteer on the Mid-Hants Railway in the 1980s, he worked on the restoration of a Maunsell brake carriage - latterly used on ambulance trains for pilgrims to Lourdes - for use by wheel-chair bound passengers. Sadly, the coach was written off in a shunting accident when almost ready for service. His enthusiasm, and energetic support for the FNRM will be greatly missed. Arrangements for Phil's Funeral The service to be held at Saint Peter’s Church, Wrestlingworth, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 2EU on Thursday 19th October at 12.30pm, followed by a private committal. There will be refreshments afterwards at the local pub, The Chequers, SG19 2EP, nearby on the main road through the village. His family has requested family flowers only, but donations, if desired, for Saint Peter’s Church may be made via Philip’s In-Memory page at www.peasgoodandskeates.co.uk or sent c/o Peasgood & Skeates 617 Newmarket Road Cambridge CB5 8PA 01223 415255 Wrestlingworth is a small village on B1042, a few miles to the east of Sandy which is on the A1, or north east from Biggleswade, also on the A1.
