The ACE at Battledown

In support of the appeal to cosmetically restore locomotive 34051 Winston Churchill, the Friends of the National Railway Museum commissioned a new print from Philip D Hawkins FGRA of three NRM locomotives at Battledown flyover on the south-western main line in the summer of 1960. Part of the purchase price is donated to the restoration appeal.

34051 is depicted hauling a portion of the Atlantic Coast Express (the “ACE”) whilst 35029 Ellerman Lines crosses the flyover with an up express and 30777 Sir Lamiel is overtaken on the down Bournemouth line. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist plus Richard Hardy, former Shedmaster at Stewart’s Lane,  and James Lester, fireman on 34051 for the funeral train of Sir Winston Churchill on 30 January 1965. The prints are available from the Quicksilver Publishing website
